  • What was found
  • What the shop recommends
  • What the insurer has approved

In California, a repair shop should obtain authorization before performing additional work beyond the approved estimate. The Bureau of Automotive Repair explains that owners must be informed about estimate changes and must authorize additional repairs. Keep copies of authorizations, supplements, photographs, invoices, and insurer communications.

The difference between a higher estimate and a better repair

A higher estimate is not automatically better. More line items do not prove that every operation is necessary.
